Something Ugly People Say & Abercrombie’s Policy of “Discrimination”.

Abercrombie_diversity “True beauty is on the inside”. Has anyone ever told you that before? To an extent, I agree, but a well know fact; that’s most often something ugly people say.

Abercrombie & Fitch is known for loud music, trendy clothes, but above all, pretty faces. When it comes to working for ANF, it is commonly understood that if you do not look and act like you truly belong at Abercrombie, you shouldn’t even apply because the chances are that you will not even get to the group interview. This leads many people to the conclusion that Abercrombie is not just selective in who they hire to represent their brand, but down right discriminatory.

Even if the accusations are true: Why do so many people feel that Abercrombie & Fitch is in the wrong by being selective in who they hire to represent their brand?

Think about this. When you walk into any Abercrombie & Fitch store, the first thing that you see is a display representation of exactly who should be wearing Abercrombie and representing the brand. During season(s), you may even see models representing not only the brand, but “the lifestyle”. You will smell the trademark mens fragrance “Fierce” which demands a young ladies attention. The music suggests in a not so quiet way, that you be outgoing, energetic and promiscuous during your visit. Every employee and “brand representative” is at the very least good looking, if not gorgeous. The clothes are sexy, stylish and of course, expensive. When you walk out of the store with your oh so prominent ANF shopping bag, everyone in the mall will know that you are “one of them”.

This is the image that Abercrombie & Fitch wishes that some of you represent, and in more ways than one, it’s not for everybody. Abercrombie and those who choose to represent the brand and lifestyle are often accused of being overly vane, rich, preppy and stuck-up, walking the earth with a “holier than thou” attitude. Maybe… but what about the employees.

I am not a news correspondent. I am not a lawyer nor am I disgruntled minority. I am simply someone who worked for Abercrombie & Fitch and these are my thoughts on the subject.
